The fruit, called the coffee cherry, turns a bright, deep red when it is ripe and ready to be harvested. The red coating of the cherry is known for its sweet flavor. The cascara, which means “husk,” “peel” or “skin” in Spanish, is the dried skins of coffee cherries. We sat around for a while drinking chai, then I asked her what was difficult about leaving her home state of Bengal and coming to Haryana where she had to learn a new language and culture. She glanced at her sons, stood up, and gestured for me to follow her into her bedroom where they wouldn’t hear. She cried while telling me about what life was like when she first came here to live with her in-laws. When we could all be together, bonding over a game that I love. Even though we didn’t speak the same language, we laughed together as we played baseball and cheered each other on. I knew I might never return to India, I might never see these faces again and I would never physically return to this very moment. I got to spend my last three days in Haryana in the leprosy colony and getting to know Komal. Komal does not have the disease, but continues to live there to help her parents who do. My team and I were able to hear the stories of three women from three different generations of one family. It was amazing to hear how much has changed over time for each of these women. Dhanno recalled being married young, not being able to go to school and how important it was for her to have children.
